Melt and pour hand made soaps

Image
Soap making is one of the fun, creative and frugal  DIY activity. There are two types of soap making process. 1. Melt and Pour - easy for beginners. As the name indicates, you just melt a soap base and customize with colors or dried flowers.  2. Cold process soap - This is the  actual process where saponification takes place. It is the chemical reaction in which oils and fats react with lye to form soap.  Sharing here three basic soap melt and pour recipes.  Basic soap making procedure   Ingredients:      8 oz. Goat Milk Melt and pour soap base (2 soaps of 4 oz)      99% Isopropyl alcohol      Few drops of Essential oil  Procedure: 1. Chop the melt and pour soap base into small pieces and melt the base in microwave using 30 second bursts. Stir between each burst to melt evenly. 2. Add essential oils and stir.  3. Spritz the base of the soap mold with alcohol and carefully pour the heated base. Spritz the top with alcohol to prevent any bubbles. 4.Once the soap

#diy #diyhomemadeproducts #diyfacecream #jyospost Saffron Aloe herbal cream Sharing here my favorite and highly rated face cream by family and friends. This cream gives the natural glow and treats acne, sun burns, eczema, melasma. (Based on the feedback) The herb that I used is Calendula, poor man's saffron. Other herbs like lavender, rose, chamomile, mint , dandelion can be substituted as well. Ingredients and why I chose them: 1. Calendula is a natural and safe solution for acne , sun burns, rashes etc. Being anti fungal and anti inflammatory , I religiously use calendula infused oil in most of my skin products. 2. Sunflower oil for infusion, it's light and suitable for all skin types and also extra protective of damaged skin. 3. Mango butter - a very rich moisturizing butter , healing and soothing helps increasing youthful appearance 4. DIY alkanet lip balm

Image
Here is another variation of lip balm prepared predominantly from alkanet root infused sweet almond oil. Alkanet root is primarily used as a natural dyeing agent which gives red Ruby to pink color based on the amount used. I infused 1 tbsp of alkanet root in 1/4 th cup of sweet almond oil for 4-6 weeks in a cool dark place occasionally shaking. Directions to make the lip balm: Step 1: Melt 1 tbsp of Shea butter,1 tbsp of bees wax, 2 tbsps of alkanet infused sweet almond oil, 1 tbsp of olive oil in a heaf proof canning jar over a medium- low heat using double boiler method. Step 2: Add few drops of vitamin E oil and essential oils after removing from the pan. I used rose absolute. Give the mixture few stirs and pour into the lip balm tubes. Once cooled cap the tubes. Voila, lip balm is ready with the pinkish tint. Alkanet root can be purchased from the below URL, rest of the other ingredients can be found in the same website or Amazon. https://www.mountainroseherbs.

Avo Olive Hair mask

Image
Its hot hot summer here in Arizona. Between the sun, chlorine water from the pool and dry wind, it is exceptionally harmful for hair and skin. Weekend is the fix time and today's mask is avacodo , olive oil and egg mask. Olive oil used in hair masks from ancient times is full of moisture and nourishment to help replenish dry air.Loaded with Vitamin E and healthy fats, the oil works to hydrate brittle ends while strengthening hair to prevent further breakage. The egg yolk truns the dry sumner hair into silky locks . Puree the avacado and slowly stir in the egg white with 2 spoons of extra virgin olive oil.

DIY Cuticle oil

Image
How many of you know about cuticle oil? Well, well even I came to know during my trip to Hawaii ,when I was shopping gifts to family. The ingredients of this oil makes a perfect DIY project. Cuticles are a tiny, funny little bit of the body ignored and abused between hand washing and all other mean things that happens to our hands. If the cuticles are not well moisturized, they're more prone to splitting or breaking leaving finger beds vulnerable to injury. It just takes a minute to prepare the oil if you have right ingredients. Ingredients: Lavender infused jojoba oil Vitamin E oil Lavender EO Frankincense EO Gernaium Rose EO Steps: Clean out an used nail polish bottle or you can use roller pens Fill the bottle with the above ingredients one by one. Gently shake the contents to blend well. For 10 drops of carrier oil, use 2 drops of Vitamin E and 1 drop of EO. You can add some real flowers. I got the real flowers from a local craft store. I prefer Jojoba o

Diamond head hike and ocean view

Image
Hawaii was one of my dream destination to visit! We planned for our 10th anniversary and I was super excited to see the greenish blue ocean that awaited every morning during our one week stay.. It was our first day in Hawaii. I'd arrived in Honolulu the day before , after a 5 hour long flight from Phoenix. We planned to do the hike right in the morning. Diamond Head, the saucer shaped crater was formed around 300,000 years ago due to a volcanic activity. The 0.8 mile hike is steep and strenuous with a glimpse into the geological and military history. You will hike to a height of 560 ft to reach the summit. The hike is easy to begin with gradually becoming not only steeper but also the ground rougher with loose stones.  After a narrow climb of incredibly steep stairs, there is a tunnel with no light leading to a spiral staircase then you clamber out through a gap in the bunker to reach the summit with incredible views. The narrow stair case Final step - bunker to r

DIY toner - Magic of roses and Witch Hazel

Image
Ah toners - as mystifying and as essential!! this skincare is one of the daily skin routine I follow, in fact multiple times in summer. This toner is very easy and simple. Toner balances pH of the skin, helps in removing excess oil, tighten skin pores, extra hydrating. The main ingredients are home made  🌹  water, Witch Hazel, essential oils. Rose Water is anti inflammatory and effective cleanser that can be economically made at home. Witch Hazel is a botanical extract derived from a flowering plant. It contains chemicals called Tannins which helps repairing broken skin, fight bacteria, stops cellular damage. Make sure that you buy alcohol free Witch Hazel otherwise it will be drying on the skin. Procedure: I used equal portions of Rose Water and Witch Hazel as my skin is normal. For dry skin use 3:1 ratio of Rose Water and WH, whereas for oily skin it is vice versa. Tweak the base recipe according to your skin type. Combine both in a glass bottle/jar along with your favor

DIY facial oil

Image
When I first heard about facial oils my feeling was oils on face!  Ew, right?! I was concerned that oils clog pores or cause an acne breakout. Here is the science behind oil cleansing, Clogging/breakout can happen if we use mineral oils. Plant oils are a lot closer to the type the skin produces naturally which is easily absorbed without clogging the pores. They help to bind moisture to the skin and strengthen cell membranes. Based on my skin needs I chose the oils, the ingredients I used are: • 2 oz jojoba oil - light weight and non greasy. Similar to natural sebum ,penetrates quicker • 2 oz apricot oil - great moisturizer and natural sun screen with SPF between 2-6 • 1 oz emu oil - the liquid gold, heals sun burns and abrasion. Natural Sun screen again • 1 oz rosehip seed oil - brightens the complexion, protective against UV • 4 drops of carrot seed oil - natural SPF between 35-40 • 3 drops of holy basil EO • 3 drops of Frankincense EO • 3 drops of Ylang ylang EO The

My hair tea /DIY natural shampoo

Image
Weekend is here and it is time for DIY products that serves for the rest of the week and today's product is natural shampoo. Most of the Indians should be familiar with the shampoo made out of reetha/sheekakai. This reminds me of my childhood experiences of burning eyes and finding a reason to bunk the school with the look of bloodshot eyes. As a kid I never worried about my hair or hair fall. It was mamas problem to nourish and maintain her hair as well as long hair of her two daughters. Being a working woman she used to take time to prepare the natural shampoo powder even we moved away from home for higher studies/job. This continued until I came to US. I switched to so called organic labelled shampoos but was never contented with the cleansing process. When I started losing my hair and near baldness I switched back to the herbal shampoo which I call as 'hair tea'. Ingredients I used: Handful of whole amla Handful of reetha Handful of sheekakai Licorice roo

Summer and Jasmines

In the depths of sultry summer, when the Mercury is soaring high and air is dry, there is nothing so lovely than the seductive fragrance of jasmine that reaches its peak late at night, even more during waxing moon. Here is the evening view from my patio, blooming Jasmine's, waxing moon, twilight, kids water play, splash of water in swimming pool... ah, what a weekend!!
